The star of A Knight’s Tale’ is a natural when it comes to her beauty regime; she cuts her own hair, loves massage and thinks clear lipgloss is the sexiest thing. Shannyn Sossamon, 24, is the gamine beauty who pipped Kate Hudson to the post to star alongside Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale. Then Josh Hartnett chose her to be his love interest in 40 Days and 40 Nights. No doubt her sultry dark looks helped : “I’m part Hawaiian, Filipino, Dutch, French, German, and Irish, but I grew up in Reno, Nevada,” she says. She is expecting her first baby this summer but in the meantime, catch her as a kooky college kid in The Rules Of Attraction. Despite the film’s straight-sounding title, it’s anything but – like Shannyn, who prefers DIY haircuts to the salon. How do you feel about becoming a mother ? I’m so excited. I’m not bored being pregnant either – I can just sit and read. I hear that when you get to eight or nine months you want the baby out so much that the fear of giving birth goes away. I’m going to have my baby at home – a water birth. Does it feel good being pregnant ? For the most part I feel at home with it. I’m really lucky I don’t have a normal job because I can be a recluse. Yesterday, I watched a whole series of Sex and the City. How do you take care of you skin ? I use Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash and Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer, which I get from the drugstore – they’re very simple products. I try to get a few minutes of sun on my face every day wearing sun cream. Are you a science or nature girl ? Nature. I like everything natural. I have this jojoba oil which my boyfriend got for me. It’s great for healing the skin, for dryness of scars. I also have a pregnancy oil with vitamin E and mustard seed oil that my mum’s friend made. Are you into any alternative therapies ? I love getting massaged – I’m an addict. I love hot springs. There are some on Beverly Boulevard – it’s great to go and sit in naturally hot spa water. You had a very hip hairdo in A knight’s Tale and a kooky hairstyle in The Rules of Attraction. Where those styles your own ? That Rules of Attraction hairdo was a fluke – I cut it myself – then it stuck for the film. Anyone can cut their hair, you know your hair the best. It’s weird when you go to a salon; you don’t know what you’ll get and when you go back it’s never the same, it’s almost like there’s some trickery to it. Have you ever colored your hair yourself ? I’ve done it with cheap boxes from the drugstore, but I’m going to make sure I see a professional from now on because it’s better for the condition of my hair. What’s your biggest hair disaster ? Once I walked into a salon in Rome and had them dye my hair red, but it came out orange. My boyfriend said, “You’re going to change that back, right ?”, which I thought was so cute. I was so orange – I can’t believe I live with it for two weeks. Do you experiment with make-up as well ? Most of the time I don’t wear any make-up. I think it make me look worse, but I’m fine with mascara and lipgloss and I’m addicted to Chapstick and Carmex. Sometimes I’ll use a red lipliner under by bottom lashes. I think it looks cool; maybe it doesn’t but no one has told me yet. What are your biggest style influences ? I like old things. I love skirts and vintage clothes. I don’t follow fashion, but I like outfits that look lived in. Do you share clothes taste with Lauren in The Rules Of Attraction ? I didn’t mind the way she dressed at all. Her clothes looked cute – for instance, the green floral sweater with the vest underneath. It’s a very kooky look. Couch potato or gym bunny ? Right now, I’m a potato. How do you stay looking like a skinny chip ? I have crap willpower but I like to walk and stretch and I’ll work out with my friend Sarah, a Pilates instructor, and do light weights. I’ll work out with her after the birth to get back in shape. What’s your best beauty tip ? You can’t go wrong with clear lipgloss – I think it’s really sexy.
